Good acoustics, more important than you think

Written on 17 June 2022

When designing our interior space, we often let the visual aspect prevail. By doing this, we sometimes create acoustic problems that should not be underestimated. Because, sound strongly determines how we experience the space. Working, or living, in a space with poor acoustics has an impact on our well-being, effectiveness and happiness.

Making the right choice asks for a certain type of experience. That is exactly where Cunrath refabrics. can help.

One wall is not the same as another

When sound hits a wall, it has three possible effects: the sound passes through the wall (transmission), the sound is attenuated (redemption) or the sound is reflected (reflection).

Most walls absorb a bit of the sound, usually about 10dB. They do not therefore attenuate sound significantly. Soft wall materials do provide a noticeable redemption. Hard materials, on the other hand, do not absorb at all, they even reflect sound. Sound that reflects has a high reverberation time. It takes a long time for it to extinguish. In large rooms with hard materials, this time is very long. In classrooms, meeting rooms and landscape offices, the reverberation time should not be over one second.

Aesthetics and acoustics can go hand in hand

Today, architects and designers very often choose hard materials. Because they look stylish and clean and because they are durable and easy to maintain. Unfortunately, a lot of these stylish materials drastically amplify the sound. The result is that people in those beautifully designed spaces see their effectiveness and well-being go down.

That can never be the intention of a design. The human ear needs something too. That is why, as an architect or interior designer, you should take into account the sound impact of your choice of materials. Fortunately, a good acoustic solution can be perfectly aesthetic. The range of absorbing materials for floors, walls and ceilings is enormous.

Sound measurements and a strong knowledge of acoustic material are the two important pillars to come to a good choice of material. Each building project has its own DNA and requires an appropriate solution. When floor covering is not feasible or appropriate, wall or ceiling covering can be the right answer. Making the right choice asks for a certain type of experience. That is exactly where Cunrath refabrics. can help. With measurements and advice, we will help you on your way. This way, we guide you to the products and finishing touches that are exactly tailored to your project.
