Biophilic means ‘love for life or living systems’. Biophilic design is thus produced with love and respect for living systems.
This love is in our nature. Our love for living systems comes from our inherent connection to nature. In our urbanised world full of technology and industrial architecture, that crucial connection sometimes seems to have been lost. Biophilic design wants to turn that around. This design looks for ways to repair that closeness.

In other words, biophilic design is an innovative way to strengthen the connection between humankind and nature through the creation of natural living, work and learning environments. With natural elements in our interior or architectural design, we unconsciously reconnect with nature. By doing this, we can bring a little of the outside world to our built-up world.
Cunrath refabrics. is a pioneer of sustainability par excellence and thus an ardent supporter of biophilic design. We claim that the inclusion of natural systems and processes is essential for people’s health. More than 50 studies worldwide, such as our Human Spaces study in collaboration with Cary Cooper, a professor of psychology, show that nature or environments simulating nature have a positive effect on our health and wellbeing.
Of course, not all spaces can be designed according to all the principles of Biophilic design, however, many elements can often be applied. We are not talking about the placing of a few potted plants but about bringing in natural light, adding plants, living walls, natural materials and providing a view of nature. All these elements have a positive effect and improve the wellbeing of people who find themselves in that space.
